RESUMO: A temática em torno de descobertas científicas é bastante negligenciada no âmbito de e sobre ciências, principalmente no que concerne em compreendê-la histórica e epistemologicamente. Inclusive, muitas vezes, descobertas são tratadas como uma simples informação de datas, locais e pessoas. Este trabalho apresenta algumas discussões centradas em episódios históricos ligados a elementos químicos e à Lei periódica, a partir de ponderações de Thomas Kuhn e Norwood Hanson, visando evidenciar e contextualizar a estrutura conceitual e epistemológica de certas descobertas científicas. Dessa forma, resgatam-se questões acerca da inseparabilidade dos contextos da descoberta e da justificativa, as complexas estruturas intrínsecas à gênese do conhecimento científico e distintos tipos e categorias de descobertas na ciência. RESUMEN: The theme surrounding scientific discoveries is quite neglected in and about the sciences, especially in terms of understanding it historically and epistemologically. In fact, many times, discoveries are treated as simple information about dates, places and people. This work presents some discussions centered on historical episodes related to chemical elements and the Periodic Law, based on reflections by Thomas Kuhn and Norwood Hanson, aiming to highlight and contextualize the conceptual and epistemological structure of certain scientific discoveries. In this way, issues related to the inseparability of the contexts of discovery and justification are recovered, as well as the complex intrinsic structures of the genesis of scientific knowledge and distinct types and categories of discoveries in science.
